Sedation Dentistry

What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation Dentistry refers to the techniques cosmetic dentists use to calm and relax a patient, and dramatically reduce pain before and during a dental procedure. Some common techniques of dental sedation are oral sedatives and painless injections.  Oral sedation is now considered the most common form of sedation dentistry.  Sometimes the patients have no memory of the dental experience at all, and may possibly fall asleep during the procedure.  This is why it is sometimes called conscious sedation dentistry.

Who can be helped by Sedation Dentistry?
There are many people who can benefit from sedation dentistry:  if you have sensitive teeth, a fear of dentists, have a bad gag reflex- Sedation during dentistry procedures can help you. People with anxiety or fear of the dentist can get needed dental care.

Who should administer Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is safe and effective when administered by a trained professional. Charlotte cosmetic dentists, Dr. Christian Yaste and Dr. Joseph Hufanda of Ballantyne Center for Dentistry are trained in sedation dentistry.

What are the benefits of Sedation Dentistry?
One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that the patient may feel the procedure only lasts a couple of minutes, when it may take several hours to perform. Sometimes sedation dentistry is called Sleep Dentistry- but this is misleading. Most people stay awake during the procedure, are sleepy, and have no memory of it.  Most describe their experience as feeling comfortable and relaxed.

If you are anxious about undergoing complicated dental procedures or have a fear of going to the dentist, Sedation Dentistry may help you feel more comfortable and less worried about the process.  Make sure you consult a trained Sedation Dentist, before using sedation dentistry.
